Competency Based Medical Education-Faculty Development for Program Leaders
Competency Based Medical Education-Faculty Development for Program Leaders

Welcome to the CBME LESSON Curriculum Transforming Pediatric Education: CBME Essentials for Pediatric Residency and Fellowship Leaders!

As pediatric training continues the transition toward a more authentic competency‑based approach, program leaders are being called upon to bring CBME to life in ways that resonate within real training environments.

This CBME LESSON curriculum is an exciting new initiative created through a partnership between the Association of Pediatric Program Directors’ (APPD) Assessment and Curriculum Learning Communities and the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), in collaboration with the APPD LESSON team. Together, this curriculum is designed to guide pediatric residency and fellowship program leaders step‑by‑step through the what, why, and how of practical implementation of CBME, guided by the pediatric Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) framework. Built to be practical, achievable, and impactful, this LESSON curriculum supports leaders in implementing CBME in ways that create meaningful change in real training environments – while also meeting accrediting and certifying expectations.

How We Are Evaluating and Improving This Course

We want to make sure this curriculum is as helpful and practical as possible for programs across the country. To continuously improve our content and understand how national resources support training programs, this course includes a quality improvement and educational evaluation project.

Here is a quick look at what information helps guide this work, and how your privacy is protected:

  • Your Feedback Helps Us Improve:
    • You will be invited to complete a brief survey right after finishing the course and again 3–6 months later. This helps us understand what worked well, what resources you still need, and what changes you plan to make in your program.
    • Understanding Our National Reach: We are looking at basic usage trends (like leadership roles and completion rates) and will keep a list of which training programs have participated so we know how broadly the curriculum is reaching residency and fellowship leaders nationwide.
  • Looking at Big-Picture Progress
    • We want to see if the curriculum is helping programs on a broader scale, we plan to partner with APPD LEARN to look at de-identified, group-level trends in CBME Data Hub usage and EPA supervision levels for trainees.
  • Our Commitment to Your Privacy:
    • Your survey responses are anonymous: We want your honest feedback! Your name, email, and individual survey answers are never shared with the team.
    • Program names are kept separate: While we track which programs have participated to understand our national reach, that list is stored separately and is never linked to survey responses.
    • Outcome data is de-identified: When reviewing educational trends through APPD LEARN, all program names are removed so no individual program's reporting data is ever singled out.
