Competency Based Medical Education-Faculty Development for Program Leaders
Welcome to the CBME LESSON Curriculum Transforming Pediatric Education: CBME Essentials for Pediatric Residency and Fellowship Leaders!
As pediatric training continues the transition toward a more authentic competency based approach, program leaders are being called upon to bring CBME to life in ways that resonate within real training environments.
This CBME LESSON curriculum is an exciting new initiative created through a partnership between the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and the Association of Pediatric Program Directors’ (APPD) Assessment and Curriculum Learning Communities, in collaboration with the APPD LESSON team. Together, this curriculum is designed to guide pediatric residency and fellowship program leaders step by step through the what, why, and how of practical implementation of CBME, guided by the pediatric Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) framework. Built to be practical, achievable, and impactful, this LESSON curriculum supports leaders in implementing CBME in ways that create meaningful change in real training environments – while also meeting accrediting and certifying expectations.
This week only (during the Spring 2026 APPD Meeting), our first module is available in DRAFT form as a sneak peek of what’s to come. This module offer an early glimpse into key CBME concepts and hands on implementation strategies that will be explored in the full curriculum.
Additional modules are actively in development and will come together as a 10 module series that walks program leaders through the essential components of CBME implementation across pediatric residency and subspecialty programs. Additional resources for frontline faculty and trainees are also on the way!
